OKUR Company was established by ABDULLAH OKUR in Ankara in 1970 and is currently managed by the second generation of the Okur family. BITUMEN EMULSIONS

At some point, it is necessary to resort to different methods in order to increase the possibility of application due to the fact that the bitumen binder is not liquid, but ready to use in outdoor conditions. At high temperatures, fire risks and energy consumption increase. When testing with chemical solvents, there are increased risks of ignition and toxic factors.
Because of these obstacles, specialists have found a way to dilute the bitumen binder with water for a more environmentally friendly and lower-cost solution, and the resulting material is called a “bitumen emulsion.” In the production of bitumen emulsion, chemicals called emulsifiers are used. These emulsifiers, dissolving in water, acquire a “+” or “–” charge. Depending on these charges, they are called anionic or cationic emulsifiers.
Bitumen binders are divided into two groups depending on the emulsifiers used: anionic bitumen binders and cationic binders. They are also divided into three groups depending on the cutting method: fast cutting, medium speed cutting and slow cutting.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF BITUMEN EMULSION

Bitumen Binder: 40-70%
Water (Softened): 30-50%
Chemicals (Emulsifiers): 0.2-2.5%
Solvent (Solvent): 0-30%
Additive (DOP): 0-4%
TYPES OF EMULSIFIER

Anionic emulsifiers (negatively charged) convert emulsions from sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide in alkali (pH ↑)
Cationic emulsifiers (positively charged) convert hydrochloric acid into phosphoric acid. (pH ↓)

WHERE ARE BITUMEN EMULSIONS USED?

Bitumen emulsions in our country are mainly used for surface coating, adhesive layer, putty, for patching, protective layer of ready-made bitumen emulsion mixture, for works to prevent moisture on bitumen bases. In addition, it is also used as a darkening layer at airports.

Surface treatment

According to the road specifications for surface coating, bitumen binders RS-1, CRS-1 or CRS-2 can be used, which comply with the TS 1082:2007 standards.

Binding bitumen layer

According to the road specifications, bitumen emulsions of the type SS-1, SS-1h, CSS-1, CSS-1h are suitable for use as a primer and bitumen emulsions RS-1, RS-2, CRS-1 and CRS-2 as an adhesive.

Protective layer application and thin-layer cold application

SS-1, SS-1h or CSS-1, CSS-1h emulsions, which are produced according to TSE standards, slow-cutting anionic and cationic types, can be used as a binder. Bitumen emulsion can be used to increase adhesion, extend the life of the binder, prevent softening and crushing under temperature changes and provide stability.

Cold application and patching

Quick-cutting cationic bitumen emulsions of the CRS-1 or CRS-2 type, which are modified according to TS EN 12591:2011, can be used as a bitumen emulsion. This bitumen emulsion has increased adhesion due to the modifying agent in the composition After the cutting procedure, there will be no tearing, no separation from the crack, etc. negative accidents, as it contains rubber-based additives in its structure and has high adhesion.

EMTEC BITUMEN EMULSION PRODUCTION

Selected for quick and easy installation, this model guarantees compliance, especially with the coldest mortar coatings (Slurry Seal). The facility is designed as a container with two solution tanks due to the continuous production. In the production process, the pumps for liquid materials such as bitumen, mortar, solvent, DOP, latex, operate with the help of an inverter and have the ability to feed the process with materials in the required proportion. In addition, by placing a flow meter at the back of each pump, it is balanced with the data obtained from the flow meter with the amount that the system needs during pumping. The bitumen and solvent are passed through the static mixer in the proportions determined according to the recipe, thus ensuring that the bitumen is in the required penetration values. In addition, this static mixer is fed with a mixture in a certain proportion to increase the adhesiveness of the bitumen with the DOP material. The bitumen leaving the static mixer in stable form enters a colloid mill.

It contains in its structure two different devices for heating the water required for the solution. It is easy to provide heating of cold water coming from outside using an electric heater or a single-plate heat exchanger, which is placed at the outlet of the emulsion product. This modern practice saves heat energy and time. The solution, homogeneously mixed and the temperature and pH reach the appropriate value, with a vertical centrifugal pump made of stainless steel 316, passing through the flow meter, reaches a colloid mill. The bitumen and mortar reaching the mill are mixed, crushed at high speed and form an emulsion. The bitumen emulsion with an approximate temperature of 80-90˚C is passed through a single-plate heat exchanger and its temperature is reduced to approximately 60˚C.
